(More customer reviews)My reason for buying this was simple. I'd tried bargain inks for my old HP printer and they messed it up. I decided if I could get a new printer for cheaper than two brand-name HP ink cartridges, I would do it, and upgrade my home printing operation altogether.
This Canon is a budget model that sacrifices a few features: there's no serial port, no photo monitor or way to connect your camera without a computer. There's also no paper tray. The paper stacks up in the back and shoots out the front, upside down, onto the table or desk itself.
That said, the paper feed slot is adaptable to legal-size paper and smaller, and even (it swears) to t-shirt thickness surfaces. The pages shoot out fairly quickly, and the ink wells are easily accessible for refill. Initial ink sets are included with the box, in both color and B&W.
I was able to carry this item home by hand with the handles on the box, and had it up and running (with the inclosed install disk) in no time at all. My text pages are legible again, and the photos (if you use the right paper) look as good as having them printed at a shop. While not the cheapest Canon inks, the 40 and 41 cartridges are cheaper than HP's comparable items.
I also really appreciate the computer toolbox for the printer; it has clear features that let you know when ink is low, and how to adjust the controls for differing projects, head cleaning, ink alignment, etc. For $49, this was a very good bargain.

Canon PIXMA iP1600 Photo Printer (White)Versatile and easy to use, the Canon PIXMA iP1600 Photo Printer gives you beautiful photos and documents right at home. You'll be amazed at the eye-catching, high-quality prints, simple operation, and customization options this compact machine delivers. Its stylish slanted design will also look great on any desktop. With the iP1600, Canon shows it has the printing of vivid and colorful images down to a science. FINE Technology What's the key to the iP1600's impressive performance? Canon Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering (FINE) uses an innovative print head with 1,472 nozzles that eject consistent, precise ink droplets as small as two picoliters. It's a simple formula: more nozzles with higher accuracy equal amazing results. This patented technology produces an outstanding color resolution of up to 4800 by 1200 color dots per inch (dpi), and 600 by 600 black dpi, for exceptional detail and photo-realism. At the same time, the Canon ChromaLife100 system, combined with the iP1600's FINE print head technology, newly developed inks, and select Canon photo papers, yield long lasting photos that will retain their beauty up to 100 years when stored in an archival quality photo album. Sharp, Clear Photos and Graphics To further enhance printing quality, the PIXMA iP1600 Photo Printer uses high-intensity ChromaLife100 color inks for sharp, clear photos and graphics. Plus, its special pigment black ink delivers laser-like text, as well as a higher resistance to smudging when you're handling or highlighting a printed document. When it comes to speed, the iP1600 is equally impressive; it produces a 4 x 6 inch photo lab quality borderless photo in approximately 70 seconds. Print speeds range up to 19 pages per minute (ppm) for monochrome and 16 ppm for color. This machine is also versatile, and lets you print on a wide range of materials. Rather than limiting you to just standard photo-sized paper, the iP1600 can handle sizes from credit card to legal size, plus envelopes, in a wide variety of weights and finishes. Canon Software Makes Customization Easy The iP1600 comes with software to help you customize your prints so you get the exact results you want. Easy-WebPrint software enables Windows users to properly print web pages in full color and without losing information off the right edge.
