Kodak Easyshare DX6340 3.1MP Digital Camera w/ 4x Optical Zoom Review

I did my homework and researched this camera before I bought it, and I am so glad I did! What I found is that this camera can work wonders! I took about 50 pictures today in varying light of the Atlanta scene. I printed one out on my printer just to see what it looks like, and I was just amazed at the quality of the pictures! There is absolutely no need to get anything higher than a 3.1 MP. I took a picture of my grandmother close up on the Portrait mode and I can see every little pore and hair! (Perhaps it's a bit too good?)
This camera is for my 63yo grandmother who has trouble operating a mouse. She already, after only one day, knows how to use this camera. It's extremely easy to use. Neither my grandmother nor I needed to touch the manual to work it.
The sole reason I remove a star from its rating is due to the software. Mine was corrupt, so I had to Download it from Kodak.com The software is also a very poor tool for editing your pictures. If you plan on editing them much, I suggest getting a program like Adobe photoshop or Microsoft Photo Editor. The software does make it slightly easier to Download pictures from the camera, but if you have a program like Adobe or Ulead Photo Explorer, the software is not necessary at all.
Ofoto, the website Kodak recommends to upload your pictures to, is great! I like the way they show the pictures online in not only clickable thumbs but also slide shows.
So far, the battery life of the camera is fine! I used it all day today, on and off constantly and there is still no flashing battery light.
Just a word of advise: I would definately invest in at least a 128MB memory card for this camera. 16 is simply not enough, especially once you realize how much you love this camera, and trust me, you will! I'd also recommend rechargeable batteries as Kodak gives you a pair that are not rechargeable.
Oh, and the Dock is a waste of money and a collector of dust. Don't bother with it. First of all it's useless, unless you got the one with the printer attatched, but even if you did get the dock with its own printer, you'd still be spending more on the dock than professional photo developing.
I hope this helps. Enjoy your camera, whichever one you choose.

Kodak EasyShare C643 6.1MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom Review

Kodak EasyShare C643 6.1MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Kodak C643 is a "small" point and shoot. It's size will let you fit it in your shirt pocket, but it can be a little too heavy to carry there, so get a small case.
Battery life is "EXCELLENT" with 2300ma (KODAK Brand)rechargeables. I have taken 20 mins of video and 30 pictures with the screen on, and the battery light is still green. I took 41 flash photos in a row on a fresh charge and the battery light was still green! That is pretty darn good for a camera with only two batteries! I haven't yet had to put in fresh batteries during a day of shooting family photos and movies.
The movie mode is superb ( I no longer use my old camcorder) and has good sound capture. Outdoor movies look great, but your inside movies will need some good lighting to obtain adequate quality (remember, it has no camera light like your camcorder.) Movies are recorded in Quicktime (mov) format. If you want to transfer them to dvd for tv viewing, you will need to convert them since most dvd players don't support that format. Kodak software does an avi conversion, but it turned out very poor. Upgrading to Quicktime Pro seems to be the easiest way to make the conversion to other formats. (about $29). Kodak software needs more work. The mov to avi conversion is ridiculous. Very basic control over photo editing. More focused on printing than digital storage.
The photos, however, are stunning. Great Kodak picture color.
The viewfinder is slightly offset, and doesn't fully represent what you will get in your photo.
The C643 has some problems with autofocus when doing macro shots.
I had extreme difficulty locking in doing closeups (less than 2ft).
The camera has a "handshake" logo that pops up when the camera isn't steady enough. Steady photography seems to be an issue with all small point and shoot cameras that use 3x plus zoom. You have to make sure to either use a tripod or rest the camera or your hand against something to obtain good shots in high zoom. All cameras with zoom have that issue unless there is some fancy image stabilization circuity ( which can add another hundred or so bucks to the price.)
The camera build is a little cheap. I do not like the quality of the card door or battery compartment door. The usb cable is a little difficult to plug in.
The menu is easy, the screen is very big and useful unless the summer sun is shinning directly into it. The zoom is fluid, and with 6.1mp, even the digital zoom is sharp.
I like the shutter Long Term Exposure mode. It will allow you to open the shutter for up to 4 secs. That can get you some real fun shots at night!

If you get this camera, I recommend getting the Kodak camera dock. It not only comes with two rechargeable batteries, but will make transfers and recharging simpler, and save wear and tear on the cheap doors. Also get a 1GB card, because you will end up taking a lot of video with this camera.
NOTE TO THOSE HAVING CAMERA PROBLEMS......USE THE KODAK RECHARGEABLE BATTERY RECOMMENDED FOR THIS UNIT. You will only meet with grief if you try to use a standard alkaline battery. They do not provide the correct amount of current capacity needed and will cause lockups, unexpectant shutdowns, etc. Even other brand name rechargeables may cause issues. Before you take the camera back to the store, purchase the Kodak battery pack with the recharger kit.

Sony Cybershot DSC-T70 8.1MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom with Super Steady Shot Image Stabilization (Silver) Review

Sony Cybershot DSC-T70 8.1MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom with Super Steady Shot Image Stabilization (Silver)

PRETTY IN PINK
I own a professional camera (Canon EOS 1D Mark III) so it was bit of an embarrassment to seek a camera for my wife that was "cute" (1st criteria), "slim" (2nd criteria), and "pink" (third criteria). For these three criteria, there is no substitute other than the T70 from Sony.
POOR PERFORMANCE
The camera performs very well in great conditions (sunny, bright days) but suffers when lighting is compromised (darkness, incandescent or fluorescent lighting). This is largely based on the camera's inability to modify white balance to accommodate the strong colour hues given in artificial light.
TOUCH SCREEN
The touch-screen menu is not entirely intuitive but it is high on the "cool factor" (no buttons to press, it's mostly touch-screen).
SMILE
Also amazing (although more in an hilarious way than a cool way) is the smile technology where the camera only takes the picture when people are smiling. It seems this only works when you have the "cheesiest" smile ever. You need to be showing all your teeth (including your molars!) to get the camera to take a picture. Our family laughed about this for an hour as we were all screaming "cheese". My wife (who normally refuses to smile for the camera) was being as cheesy as ever! This feature is a bit silly and impractical but it can be fun.
MEMORY DUO STICK
Another factor with this camera is it's use of the Memory Duo for photo storage. This is a proprietary Sony item, and appears to be destined to the same history as Beta Video tapes (ie. premature obsolescence). Memory is cheap (we bought a 2GB card for $30) but you are unlikely to already have this card from a previous camera unless you are a Sony person. You should also check that you have a card reader (for more efficient transfer of images) on your computer.
8.1 MP TOO MUCH!
Lastly, the 8.1 MP is great, but the optics and image quality aren't worthy of this MP size. I would suggest that you are wasting memory and time shooting at full size. You will not lose much (if any) discernible quality by shooting at 5MP.
OTHER OPTIONS
Before you consider this camera, I would suggest looking at the Canon A720IS or Canon A560. The camera are not as "cool" but the image quality will be remarkable. My son's graduation pictures (from kindergarten) were wasted using the "cute" camera and nothing will recapture that moment.

HP Photosmart R967 10MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom Review

HP Photosmart R967 10MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I rated this with 3 stars because it does not go in half increments would have rated it 3.5 stars if I could, because it does have some minor issues but for the most part I have been happy with it.
The good:
1. Very large screen. 3"
2. On camera photo adjustment such as cropping, red eye, Panoramic, slimming feature ( everyone likes this feature).
3. Very good picture quality.
4. Mode features are intuitive.
5. pretty compact for large screen.
6. Video feature pretty good for a camera lets you choose different resolutions and will let you zoom while videoing. the ISO is pretty good on this as well for shooting at night. Will let you run the video for as long as you have memory or battery life. My older Canon would only let me do 30 second shots. Would have been nice if flash would also act as light.
Comes with 32 meg in the camera. Very small but would let you get a few shots in if you filled up your memory card.
The not so good.
1. anti-shake feature does not work with mode feature for night shots had to use auto mode to get best picture. Would need a tripod for night shots.
2. With the buttons on top handling the camera can cause you to accidentally turn the camera on when you don't want to.
3. the battery compartment/ memory card door is difficult to close and lock. it takes an effort to lock the tab. opening is OK though.
4. docking, which at first sounded like a plus. is not the easiest to use. the camera does not slip into this easily, I had to pick it up and line it up to use. It will charge the camera for you while you down load files though.
5. The battery life is not great, I guess a trade off for a large screen and compact design.
The BAD:
1. I had camera lock up on me 3 times since owning it. (only a month so far, got it after Thanksgiving 2006)seems there is an issue sometimes when saving or viewing video on the camera. Had to remove battery to get the camera working again. It froze when I went to try to view the video on the camera. It also happened to me when I was saving a panoramic shot. It will also take long time to go from taking a picture to using the video right after each other I would say around 10 seconds. This can be a long time when you are trying to get a shot quickly. I am planning to contact HP to see if this is a common issue and if it is will they offer a firm ware update on this camera to correct these issues.
Don't get me wrong, I do like this camera. I have been a fan of HP for a while. I will update this opinion if things change as I use this more.
